Moon sign calculator: what's your Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is about your emotions and what you need to feel safe. See which sign the Moon was in when you were born, with its degree and house. Don't know your birth time? We'll tell you whether your Moon sign holds anyway.

When were you born?

Your date tells us which sign the Sun and each planet were in. It's the first piece of the calculation and isn't used for anything else.

What time were you born?

Don't know your birth time? Enter 12:00 pm (noon). The Moon spends a little over two days in each sign, and we'll tell you if it changed signs that day. For your Moon's house, though, you do need the exact time.

Where were you born?

Start typing your city and pick it from the list. That's how we get the exact coordinates of where you were born.

We set the time zone for your date and place automatically, including any historical changes.

What is a Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. Along with your Sun sign and your rising sign, also called your Ascendant, it's one of your big three: the three parts of a birth chart that carry the most weight.

If your Sun is about who you are at your core, your Moon is about what you need to feel safe: how you look after yourself, what calms you down, and how you react when something touches you deep down. Two people with the same Sun sign and different Moons can go after the same things and find comfort in very different ways.

What this calculator shows you

  • Your Moon sign, with its exact degree and the house it falls in (the area of your life where it shows most), right at the top of your results.
  • Whether your Moon sign is certain even if your birth time isn't exact, or whether the Moon changed signs that day.
  • The lunar phase on the day you were born: how the Moon looked, depending on where it was relative to the Sun.
  • Your full birth chart below: the ten planets, your Ascendant, the twelve houses, and the aspects, the angles the planets form with each other.

Everything is calculated with NASA ephemeris data (the tables NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory publishes to track where each planet is at any moment) and the time zone that was in effect in your city on the day you were born. Your results appear in a few seconds, no card or account needed.

Don't know your birth time?

Enter 12 pm (noon). The Moon takes a little over two days to cross a sign, so on just over half of all days it stays in the same sign from start to finish. The calculator checks where the Moon was at 12:00 am and at 11:59 pm on the day you were born, then gives you a clear answer: either your Moon sign is certain, or the Moon changed signs that day and your birth time decides which one is yours.

Your exact birth time does matter for two things: your Moon's house and your rising sign. You'll usually find it on your birth certificate, or you can request it from your state's vital records office.

How to read your Moon

The sign describes how you experience your emotions. With a Cancer Moon, you need closeness and a sense of home. With an Aquarius Moon, you need room to process things your own way. The house points to the area of your life where that shows most, and your Moon's aspects, the angles it forms with other planets, show what it clashes with and what it gets along with.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate my Moon sign without my birth time?

Often, yes, but not always. The Moon spends a little over two days in each sign, so on just over half of all days it stays in the same sign for the full 24 hours. On the other days, it changes signs at some point. If you don't know your birth time, enter 12 pm (noon). The calculator checks where the Moon was at the start and the end of that day, then tells you whether your Moon sign is certain or whether the Moon changed signs that day.

How long does the Moon stay in each sign?

On average, the Moon spends a little over two days in each sign, because it moves through all twelve signs in about 27 days and 8 hours. It doesn't always move at the same speed. It covers roughly 12° to 15° a day, so one sign takes it anywhere from about two days to close to two and a half.

What's the difference between a Sun sign and a Moon sign?

Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in when you were born, the one almost everyone knows. Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in. The Sun is about who you are at your core and what gives you energy. The Moon is about your emotions, what you need to feel safe, and how you react when something touches you deep down.

If the calculator already shows my Moon sign, why do you need my birth time?

Your birth time is what places your Moon in a house. The sign describes how you experience your emotions, and the house points to the area of your life where that shows most: home, work, or your relationship. The house does depend on your exact birth time. And if the Moon changed signs on the day you were born, your birth time is also what decides your Moon sign.

Is my Moon sign the same as the lunar phase I was born under?

No. The lunar phase is how the Moon looked when you were born, depending on where it was relative to the Sun: how much of its disk was lit. Your Moon sign is the part of the zodiac the Moon was in. You can be born under a full moon in any sign. The calculator gives you both.

Do you store my birth details?

We don't store your birth details in any database, and we don't link them to an account. Your birth date, time, and place are sent to our calculation server to work out the positions in your chart. You can use the calculator without creating an account, and no card is needed.
